Charlotte Neighborhoods: An Eclectic Blend of Old and New
Charlotte 's neighborhoods are its heart and
soul, each with its own unique character and personality. A true sense of
community is everywhere you look in our city... from the hustle and bustle of
uptown to the understated grace of old Charlotte to the boomtown of the
University City area. Walk down any of our tree-lined streets and you'll see
people jogging, strolling, gardening or just chatting over the fence with the
neighbors. Give me a call at 704-560-4604 or complete the response form below
and I can help you find the perfect neighborhood to call home. Meantime, here's
a quick tour around some of my favorites to get you started:
UPTOWN
Roughly bordered by the I-277 freeway loop,
this one square mile area is shiny, new and attracts those who like the "big
city" life. In the past few years, Charlotte 's uptown has come alive once more
with trendy restaurants, bars and clubs.

Uptown Charlotte is
alive night and day with trendy restaurants, bars and clubs. |
Fourth Ward, a quaint pocket of Victorian
homes and historic condo conversions, led the uptown rebirth some 15 years ago.
Fourth Ward is within walking distance of "The Square", which is the city's
historic center at the intersection of Trade and Tryon streets.
The intersection of Trade and Tryon Streets,
known as "The Square" is the center of the uptown district. |
Following Fourth Ward's success, several
upscale condo projects have sprung up on North Tryon and North Church Streets,
with plans for more in the future.
OLD Charlotte
Myers Park and Eastover were some of the first
suburbs of Charlotte , and feature large, stately homes and beautiful canopies
of willow oaks. |
Dilworth, Elizabeth, Myers Park,
Plaza-Midwood and Eastover were all "streetcar suburbs" that expanded Charlotte
south and east of uptown from about 1898 to 1930. These neighborhoods have
retained and preserved their true character probably more than any to be found
in our city. They're lovingly restored "front-porch" neighborhoods with
traditional sidewalks, funky shops and restaurants.
Myers Park offers many "pedestrian friendly" shopping and dining
choices. |
South End, an area of Dilworth along South
Boulevard, has recently seen a revitalization of
warehouses-turned-retail/restaurants. Central Avenue in the Plaza-Midwood area
has also followed this trend, with a European bakery, eclectic clothing stores
and 60's retro antique shops. Further down Central, you'll find a veritable
trip around the world of Asian and Hispanic markets and restaurants.
Most of the homes in Plaza-Midwood are turn of the century bungalows
glowing with character and charm. |
Much of Dilworth and Midwood have been
designated as historic districts, further preserving the charm of their turn of
the century bungalow style houses. Myers Park and Eastover were the first "high
end" suburbs and are characterized by large, stately homes and beautiful
canopies of willow oaks. In fact, there's no better introduction to Old
Charlotte than a slow drive down Queen's Road in the spring, when the dogwoods
and azaleas are blazing with color. I promise, you'll be hooked
forever!
Queens Road in Myers Park is a "dream drive" in the spring, when the
dogwoods and azaleas are blazing with color. |
NORTH Charlotte
North Charlotte is the city's connection to
its textile past, with neat, renovated mill houses and cotton
mills-turned-living spaces dominating the neighborhood. The area's core- around
North Davidson and 36th Streets- has seen a true renaissance over the past ten
years. Now known as "NoDa", for "North Davidson", it is now a trendy artist's
district that features a cool "gallery crawl" every month. With the center city
just a quick trip away, the Charlotte skyline serves as the perfect backdrop
for glorious sunsets in this eclectic and creative enclave.
UNIVERSITY CITY
The University City area is truly a boomtown
that has seen an explosion of growth over the past 15 years. Once just cow
pastures and rural roads, it now features many subdivisions and shopping
centers that have sprung up around the UNC Charlotte area. Development
mushroomed after many high powered Charlotte businesses such as First Union,
IBM, Duke Power and other high tech companies moved offices to "campuses" in
this area. As the workers arrived so did the development of planned communities
built around golf courses and other amenities. If you're looking for new
construction, you'll find it here with tons of entertainment possibilities
nearby. Lowe's Motor Speedway is right up the road, along with the Verizon
Wireless Amphitheatre where you can catch rock concerts and stage performances.
And if you love the outdoors, Reedy Creek Park, Mecklenburg's largest nature
preserve is also in your neck of the woods.
SOUTH Charlotte
From the SouthPark mall vicinity through
Matthews and Pineville to the South Carolina state line, this is where you'll
find many of the area's premiere addresses. Most are about six miles from the
center of town and offer the appeal of suburban living with the convenience of
being close to downtown.
South Charlotte boasts one of the Charlotte -Mecklenburg Public
Library's newest branches- the Morrison Regional Library. |
The Southpark , Park Road and Cotswold are
popular areas that encompass many neighborhoods that were built from the 1950's
to the present. These areas offer large size lots and larger houses
Homes
range from brick ranches to neighborhoods filled with stately mansions and
townhomes.
South Charlotte offers many high-end shopping choices, including
Southpark and the trendy shops at Phillips Place. |
This is also where you'll find some of the
city's fanciest shopping, including the "minivillage" of Phillips Place which
features high end shops like New York's favorite neighborhood market Dean &
Deluca, trendy Restoration Hardware and upscale dining at The Palms.
