Shining Star of the New South

Check our list of useful Links at the end of this page!

Charlotte is a shining star of the "New South"… a dynamic city on the move that has not forgotten its rich roots and traditions.

The Scotch-Irish settled Charlotte in the 1740's, many moving down from central Pennsylvania. A large influx of German colonists came South about the same time. In fact, Charlottegot its name from German born Queen Charlotte, the wife of England's King George III. That's also why Charlotte is referred to as the "Queen City".

With the discovery of gold in 1799, Charlotte was put on the map as the gold mining capital of the country. This was the city's first step toward becoming a financial center. By 1903 the region was leading the textile industry as the cotton business had moved down from New England. With the arrival of the railroad, Charlottewas on the way to becoming the center of one of the nation's largest urban regions.

The annual Festival in the Park

Charlotte's population is just over a half million people, but there are nearly 6.4 million people living within a 100 mile radius of the city. Despite those statistics Charlotteand the towns that surround it have a friendly "hometown" feel. Yet, no matter if you are in the college town of Davidson or the quickly growing Pineville, you are only minutes from all the benefits a big city has to offer.

Charlotte Douglas /International Airport is ranked as the 23rd most active airport in the nation. You can get a direct flight to London, Los Angeles or Myrtle Beach. But why go all that way when you can see an opera, watch a ballet or visit a museum right here in town. Professional sports - we're teaming with it. The Hornets, the Panthers, NASCAR and the Knights all call Charlotte home. Professional golf tours also make stops here at our championship courses. Shopping - we've got shopping, fancy shops to outlet malls - whatever you're looking for. We are an international city without the international flight.

Charlotte has been ranked as one of the hottest and most affordable housing markets by U.S. News & World Report. The average price of a new home is $187,000, the average of an existing home is around $177,000. Yet Charlotte offers a wide range of choices, from a starter condo for around $45,000, to luxury units in Myers Park at over a million dollars. First time buyers can find the choices mind-boggling, a new home with two-car garage or a brick ranch on a sidewalk lined street, both for around the $130's. Families may prefer a home on a golf course or in a planned community with recreational facilities and nearby shopping. Many retirees find Charlotte's lake communities appealing: boating, fishing, water sports, golf & tennis all within minutes of our city - what's not to love? Whatever you're looking for, you can find it in Charlotte or the surrounding towns.

Twenty-five years ago when I first moved to Charlotte, it was a small town with a big city feel. Now it's a big city with a small town feel. Our unprecedented growth has brought a certain sophistication to this town. And yet, the waitress at the lunch counter still knows your name and greets you with a friendly smile. Walk down almost any street or the aisles of the local hardware store and you're sure to run into someone you know. That's what makes Charlotte feel like home… my hometown and yours.

Real Estate Tips
Selling Your Home >Dress For Success

Looking good is important when you want to make a great impression, whether for a job interview or a social function. The same is true of a home that is on the market. When the "For Sale" sign goes up in front of your home, it should be "dressed" for the occasion.

Since the first impression will be of the front of the house, a well-groomed exterior is crucial, from the landscaping to the paint. The interior of your home should be clean and tastefully decorated. Take care of any minor cosmetic repairs that are needed, such as cracked plaster or peeling paint. A sparkling kitchen and shiny bathrooms, clean windows, and the absence of clutter will help your home "show well". Keeping your home looking good at all times is hard work, especially if you have children and are packing for a move. However, the dividends are impressive, because a home that looks well cared for has an excellent chance of selling quickly and for the best price.
