The hotel and construction boom continues in Uptown Charlotte.

The brand new Intercontinental Hotel going up in Uptown will feature 250 lavish hotel

rooms and will target international luxury travelers. The company has properties all over the world in major cities including Los Angeles, New York, Miami, Sao Paulo and Beijing. Other new hotels that are popping up in the Uptown area include Embassy Suites, which opened last month, Kimpton, which is opening in October, SpringHill Suites, which is opening in April, and AC Hotel/Residence Inn, which will be opening in late 2017 or early 2018 atop the EpiCentre.

The construction of the Intercontinental Hotel will sit atop the historic Carolina Theatre

at the corner of Sixth Street and North Tryon Street, as the theater is being renovated and restored. Although currently run-down, the theater will be soon be new again. The hotel and theater renovation will be part of a larger revitalization of the northern part of Uptown Charlotte.

The theater will be undergoing a $42 million restoration and reconstruction. It has been closed since 1978 and has since been vacant. Having been built in 1927, the building is home to plenty of history and character. Plans for the building involve restoring the theater’s original facade as well as constructing a new lobby. The newly revamped theater is slated to open in 2019. It will be a grand five stories high and with the hotel totaling 20 stories, the height of the entire project will be a stunning 25 stories.

Additional developments are planned near the Carolina Theatre project as part of the continued revitalization of North Tryon Street and the immediately surrounding area.
